19 apply for Abbeville’s parks and recreation director

ABBEVILLE - he City of Abbeville stopped taking applications Friday for the new parks and recreation director and a total of 19 people have applied for the position.

The applicants are from seven states, including Louisiana, California, Indiana, Kansas, Ohio, Utah and Florida.

A total of 14 of the 19 are from Louisiana. There are seven from Vermilion Parish, five from Lafayette Parish, one from Crowley and one from New Iberia.

“I am pleasantly surprised,” said Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza. “I was expecting seven or eight.”

The list of 19 was expected to get trimmed down to four people Monday night by the Parks and Recreation Bord.

The Parks and Recreation Board will then submit its top four recommendation to the Abbeville City Council and Piazza.

From that point on, the City will begin interviewing the candidates.

Piazza said he looked over the first 13 applicants and liked what he saw. Six more arrived in the mail on Friday and he has not looked at them.

The City began the search for a parks and recreation director and it terminated A.A. Comeaux Youth as the recreation provider for the City earlier in the month.

A.A. Comeaux Youth will continue to operate youth baseball and softball programs throughout the summer.

A new director is expected to be hired in May.
