CROWLEY – On the night of November 20, a special little girl’s dream came true. Contestant number twelve, Summar Paige Leleux was named as the 2008 Miss Merry Christmas Queen.

Summar is the daughter of Brandon and Misty Leleux and attends Redemptorist Catholic. Crowning the new queen was Kelsey Leilani Lagasca, 2007 Miss Merry Christmas Queen; and the jolly old guy himself, Santa Claus.

The Thursday night event, held at the Rice Festival Building, began by Maureen Fontenot, president of Eta Kappa Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, welcoming everyone in the house to this joyous occasion. Fontenot then went on to introduce the Master of Ceremonies, Mr. Jimmy Broussard.

Emcee Jimmy Broussard started by welcoming their special guest, Santa Claus, onto the stage. Broussard then signaled for the presentation of the 2007 Miss Merry Christmas’ farewell walk. The past queen, Kelsey Leilani Lagasca, is the daughter of Michael and Chrystal Lagasca and she attends South Crowley Elementary.

Following the reigning queen’s final adieu, the emcee enthusiastically introduced the twenty-five beautiful little contestants vying for the chance to hold the title of the 43rd Miss Merry Christmas Queen.

Providing the entourage with great entertainment was Dolores Nutt’s School of Dance and Redemptorist Catholic’s Bell Choir.

In the beginning there was twenty-five, then there was ten and in the end it came down to the final five.

Emcee Broussard announced the final tallies from the prestige panel of judges starting with the announcement of the fourth runner-up, contestant number sixteen, Madison Paige Sonnier of Mermentau Elementary School. He continued with the naming of the remaining categories including the third runner-up title holder, contestant number thirteen, Skylar Nolan of South Crowley Elementary, second runner-up, contestant number seven, Alexis Paige Romero, also of South Crowley Elementary; first runner-up, contestant number eighteen, Claire M. Meyer of South Crowley Elementary School; and the long awaited announcement of the new Miss Merry Christmas Queen, contestant number twelve, Summar Paige Leleux of Redemptorist Catholic. A presentation of certificates and gifts to the contestants was then carried out by Monica Bertrand, club chairman.

Concluding the night was an introduction of the judges who were at that time presented with gifts and Santa Claus drawing the winning name for the Christmas stocking raffle. With all raffle proceeds going to a non-profit organization of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority’s choice, the lucky individual who’s name was pulled was Zailey Smith, daughter of Niki Smith.

Lynne Broussard, sorority member, was called upon to give the nights closing remarks.
