27th Annual Buggy Festival this Weekend
CHURCH POINT – The town of Church Point is prepping for its signature event of the year as it is once again time for the annual Buggy Festival
of Church Point. The festival will be this weekend June 5-7, 2009. This will be the 27th year of the festival’s history in Church Point, which has been proclaimed as the “Buggy Capitol of the World.”
The festival highlights the “buggy” which was the main means of transportation for the area’s ancestors. Buggies will be on display throughout the weekend and will be the focus of the Grand Parade which will be held on Sunday.
The Acadia-St. Landry Medical Foundation are the annual sponsors of the event and claim to have the best ever line-up of bands, food and fun.
The following is the schedule of events for this weekend’s festival:
Friday, June 5
5:30 p.m. - Opening ceremony, invocation and blessing. Introduction of Buggy Festival officials, city officials, dignitaries.
6:30 p.m. - 1 a.m. - Festival Grounds open. Live music, foods, drinks, crafts, buggy display, souvenir booths, etc.
7 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. - Leon Chavis and the Zydeco Kingpins
11 p.m. - 1 a.m. - Travis Matte and the Kingpins
Saturday, June 6
9:30 a.m. - 1 a.m. - Fair Grounds open. Live music, food, drinks, crafts, buggy display and souvenir booths, etc.
9 a.m. - 12 p.m. - Bradley Venable, Howard Noel and Cajun Boogie
12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. - Don Fontenot et Les Amis de la Louisiane
4 p.m. - 7 p.m. - Lil’ Kenny and the Heartbreakers
9 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. - Paul Daigle, Cajun Gold and Family Bandde
7:30 p.m. - Accordion Extravaganza
11 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. - Wayne Toups and Zydeco Cajuns
Sunday, June 7
10 a.m. - 4 p.m. - Live music, food and drinks, crafts, buggy display and souvenir booths
11 a.m. - Official crowning of the 2008-2009 Buggy Festival Queen and Teen Queen, Park Pavilion.
10 a.m. - 1 p.m. - Main St. Band
1 p.m. - Grand Buggy Festival Parade: Buggies, antique cars, horse drawn carriages, floats, trail riders/club and horseback.
2:30 p.m. - Youth extravaganza
1:30 - 4 p.m. - Joel Martin and da Classiques
6 p.m. - Sa Tout!
This year’s parade route will be on Church Blvd. and Rogers St. adjacent to the Catholic Church. The Parade line-up starts at 11:30 a.m. There will be no advance registration.
