29ers fall into loser's bracket Friday

The Abbeville Legion Post 29ers have certainly made the first two games of post season play exciting ones. The difference in Friday’s 8-7 loss against the Delhomme Drillers, was that Abbeville finished on the wrong end of the final score.

Abbeville jumped out to a one-run lead in the first inning. Trey Broussard started the game off with a double and was later scored on another double by Tony Frederick.

Jacob Frederick got the start on the mound for Abbeville. After throwing a scoreless first inning, Delhomme put two runs on the board in the bottom of the second to take the lead.

Trey Broussard would single in his next plate appearance. His hit was followed with a double by Randy Frederick Tony Frederick then picked up his second RBI of the game when he sent Broussard me on a ground ball to the third baseman. Randy Frederick attempted to score from third after the throw to pick him off at third went wild, but he was caught at home plate.

Jacob Frederick worked his way out of a jam in the bottom of the third inning to keep the game tied at 2-2. After giving up one hit and walking two, Frederick struck out the next two batters with the bases loaded to exit the without harm.

Jacob Frederick then led off the top of the fourth with a walk. Two batters later, Trey DeRouen was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with only one out. Ethan Hebert singled in Frederick from third with a hit that found its way into the left-center field gap. Jake Faulk would single to center field on the next at bat, but was not able to pick up the RBI as DeRouen was thrown out on a play at the plate. Hebert was also thrown out at the plate for the third out of the inning after a Will Armstrong single.

Abbeville opened its lead to three runs after Trey Broussard and Randy Frederick each scored on an RBI double by Jacob Frederick.

Abbeville found itself in trouble again in the fifth inning. Jacob Frederick gave up two walks and two hits which allowed two Delhomme runs to score. His brother, Tony Frederick came in to relive him with two outs and runners in scoring position. Tony Frederick picked off a runner at first to get out of the inning holding on to a one run lead.

Abbeville continued to pour on the runs in the sixth inning. Jake Faulk led off the inning with a hit that bounced off the center-field fence. He was thrown out attempting the stretch the hit into a triple. Will Armstrong then collected his second hit of the game with a double. He would later score on an error on a ball hit by Randy Frederick.

With the game tied at six with only two innings to play, Trey Broussard collected his third of four hits while scoring his fourth run of the game for Abbeville on a solo home run that sailed over the left-center-field wall.

Again, Delhomme answered with another run in the bottom of the eighth to even the score at seven. Reliever, Tony Frederick, worked his way out of a bases loaded jam to hold Delhomme to only one run.

The score remained tied at 7-7 through regulation. Abbeville threatened in both the ninth and 10th innings, but could not manufacture a run. Delhomme struck the final blow in the bottom of the 10th inning after Ethan Hebert, who came in to pitch during the ninth inning, walked two and allowed one hit.

With the 8-7 loss, Abbeville fell into the losers bracket of the subregional playoff. Abbeville played in an elimination game Saturday, a game that was going on past press time.
