4-H Rice, Sugar and Sweet Potato Cookery Contests to be held November 24

The 4-H Rice, Sugar and Sweet Potato Cookery Contests are scheduled for Monday, November 24.

These contests are sponsored by Evangeline Parish Rice Growers Association, Mikey’s Donuts, Evangeline Parish Tourism and the Evangeline Parish 4-H Foundation.

The cookery contests will be held in the Sacred Heart Elementary Cafeteria with entries being accepted between 12 noon and 1 p.m. All Evangeline Parish 4-H members, regardless of projects selected, are eligible to participate. 4-H’ers may enter one dish in each division.

Contestants must submit a copy of the contest recipe written in correct form with the dish. Dishes must be brought to the Sacred Heart Elementary Cafeteria in a cold state ready for judging.

The entire dish must be exhibited. Garnishes or anything used to enhance the appearance of the dish must be in or on the serving container. No placemats, flowers, table arrangements, figurines, etc. can be used.

The Rice Contest categories are: rice main dish, rice side dish and rice dessert. Pre-registration is not required for any rice division. The rice dishes must contain a minimum of one cup of cooked rice. Wild rice is not cultivated rice in Louisiana and does not meet the requirement of one cup of rice. Dishes containing rice products must also contain cooked rice.

The Sugar Cookery Contest requires the sugar dish contain at least one cup of sugar. The final product should not have raw eggs. The two contest categories are: baked (breads, cakes, pies, cookies, etc.) and non-baked (candies, icebox pies, ice cream, etc.). No part of the dessert can be baked. This contest does not include homemade jams, jellies, preserves, etc.

The Sweet Potato Cookery Contest requires the sweet potato dish utilize a minimum of one cup of fresh, frozen, or canned sweet potatoes. The contest categories are: dessert and other sweet potato dishes.

Specific guidelines for the Rice, Sugar, and Sweet Potato Cookery Contest were included with the “4-H Clover Patch” given to all 4-H’ers during the October Club meeting.

All entries will receive a blue, red or white ribbon. The Parish Winner in each Rice and Sugar category will represent Evangeline Parish in the area cookery competition, which will be held in Jennings in March of 2009. The Evangeline Parish Tourism Council will present the Champion Sweet Potato winners with a cash prize.

All contest participants are requested to enter the Sacred Heart Elementary campus through the back gate and parking area and go directly to the cafeteria.
