72nd International Rice Festival announcements
CROWLEY – The selection of the 72nd International Rice Festival Queen will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2008, at the Home Bank Sound Stage in Crowley, Louisiana.
Young ladies between the ages of 17 and 23 from throughout the State of Louisiana are invited to participate in the Queen’s Contest. Contestants will arrive on Friday, October 17, 2008. The 72nd International Rice Festival Queen will attend the Washington, DC Mardi Gras Ball, the Rice Millers Convention in Florida, and many festivals throughout Louisiana. The Queen will receive $1,000 for travel expenses, a $500 Cash Scholarship from Iberia Bank, a $500 Cash Scholarship from Sonic Drive-In Restaurants, and a $500 Cash Scholarship from Cajun Country Rice (Falcon Rice Mill).

Also, Wille Washington, Rice Grading Superintendent, announces that the annual Rice Grading Contest will be held on Wednesday, October 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the USDA Federal Inspection Service, Grain Division Office, located on West Highway 90 in Crowley.
The contest is open to all rice graders and buyers worldwide. The participants will be required to grade long and medium grain varieties.
Awards of $100 and plaque to first place, $75 and plaque to second place, and $50 and plaque to third place will be awarded to the winners on Friday, October 17, at the Rice Festival Main Platform on the south side of the Court Circle on Parkerson Avenue in Crowley at 1 p.m.
