Abbeville Film and Visitor Commission experiences growing pains

Early last year the Louisiana Legislature approved the creation of the Abbeville Film and Visitor Commission and today that organization is working to become a presence in the Louisiana Film industry.

The latest meeting of the commission was a productive one with the finalization of the by-laws, the creation of an advisory committee, the appointment of Odile Secrest as Vice-Chairman and a new e-mail address where interested persons, entities or film companies can contact the commission directly.

“We really need a website and a short film that shows all the great things there are to offer in Abbeville and the parish,” Commissioner John Valdetero stated.

The rest of the commission unanimously agreed and the target date for completion of both of these projects is January 5, 2009.

Joining the advisory committee is filmmaker Steven Esteb of Erath.

“There are certain elements that a filmmaker looks for in a community and I hope I can steer the commission in the right direction with this,” Esteb submitted.

The film industry in Louisiana is growing each year with the creation of more tax incentives for the film companies.

According to the Louisiana Film and Video Commission based in Baton Rouge, the Louisiana Motion Picture Incentive Program was created in order to achieve three basic goals:

• To encourage film and video production in Louisiana

• To advocate the hiring of Louisiana technical crew and talent

• To support and encourage the use of Louisiana equipment and services related to film and video production.

Several cities around the state have been home to productions with Lafayette and Abbeville being two of the most recent venues.

“We hope to continue to gain momentum as we put our promotional material in place,” Chairman Gale Luquette stated.

“Abbeville and Vermilion Parish has so much to offer to the film industry.”
