Abbeville Police Department finally gets underway

At the last meeting of the Abbeville City Council, Mayor Mark Piazza announced that the bid process for the new Abbeville Police Department would be started.

The bid appeared in the Wednesday, August 20 edition of the Abbeville Meridional.

The facility, which will be built on the site of the last police department and next door to the current location, which will be a 3,600 square foot police station will also house administrative offices, an evidence vault, a lobby and along with other space for various uses.

The plan for the proposed facility was to gain funds from the state capital outlay fund in the amount of $300,000, but with the limits Gov. Jindal put on that money, the funds were not awareded to the City of Abbeville.

Sen. Nick Gautreaux put the request for the funds before the legislature and was confident at the time that it would be awarded.

He told Mayor Piazza that he would continue to pursue it in the next session.

“We don’t have all the money yet, but there are certain people, me included, who think we need to get this project started,” Mayor Piazza stated.

“We are paying rent on the building now; we need to get at least Phase one going.”

Phase one is the construction of the physical structure and although it may have to be added on to as the funds are available, the mayor, council and police department are eager to get the project underway.

It is expected that the building will be done sometime in the fall of 2009.
