Acadiana Center for the Arts’ Creativity at the Center’s February Classes and Workshops
LAFAYETTE - The Acadiana Center for the Arts’ Creativity @ the Center is an annual series of hands-on workshops for young people, families and adults built upon our award-winning core programs. Creativity at the Center offers students and adults of all ages opportunities to study arts disciplines under the guidance of professional artists, educators and guest lecturers. February through May. there are several workshops and classes. They include acting classes. All students, regardless of future work, can build confidence in public speaking, practice collaborative and group-working skills, nurture the imagination and creativity, and just have fun! Acting classes, led by Acting Up (in Acadiana), are available for students ages 7 and up.
The Acting Class schedule is Elementary School: Wednesdays, 4:30 – 5:30 pm; Junior High and Beginner High School: Mondays, 4:30 –6 pm; Intermediate High School and Beginner Adults: Tuesdays, 6 – 7:30 pm; Company Class: Mondays 6:15–7:45 pm. (Participation by audition or invitation.)
Additionally, Tuesday February 8, 10 am–1 pm OR Saturday, February 12, 10 am – 1 pm there is an interesting session called Spirit Mandalas. Relax, reflect and rejuvenate! This three hour creative retreat explores Mandalas, concentric circular designs that have historically been used for self-reflection, healing, celebrations and rituals. This workshop will include lessons in acrylic painting techniques, elements of design, composition and color theory. Age is adult. Classes led by painter, Jill Broussard and is $48/$40 for AcA members. Materials included.
On Wednesday, February 9, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm is Song Circles: Songs for Mardi Gras and Carnival. This is a sing-a-long session to get ready for Mardi Gras and Carnival celebrations with songs from Louisiana and beyond. Classes led by Marce Lacouture and special guests, is $15 per workshop/$10 for AcA and LFR members and presented by Louisiana Folk Roots and supported in part by the Gannett Foundation.
Saturday, February 19, 9 am – 1 pm is the Cajun Prairie Mardi Gras Mask and Capuchon-Making Workshop. Here’s an exciting and colorful hands-on Cajun Prairie Mardi Gras workshop with renowned local costume-maker Jackie Miller, where she’ll show you how to create your own mask and capuchon in time for all the Mardi Gras fun! Workshop is to be led by Jackie Miller, is $35/$30 for AcA and LFR members. Materials are included. The Capuchon making workshop is presented by Louisiana Folk Roots and supported in part by the Gannett Foundation.
A wire wrapping, Jewelry Workshop is to be held Saturday, February 26. 9:30 am – Noon. Transform straight wire and loose beads into a bracelet and earrings. Beaders will become more familiar and comfortable with the various tools and multiple step processes needed to wrap and loop silver or gold wire into a veritable chain! We will use base metal wire to start, along with a choice of freshwater pearls, natural gemstones and sparkling glass. This class is handwork-intensive and, like all beading, takes some patience. Participants must bring their own tools: round-nosed pliers, chain-nosed pliers and cutters. Ages 15 and up. Workshops led by local designer and bridge jeweler, Meagan Patout. Workshops are $35 each/$30 for AcA members. Materials included.
The Young Masters Series is Saturday, February 26, 10:00 am – Noon - Wassily Kandinsky and Saturday, February 26, 1:00 – 3:00 pm - Frida Kahlo. Get to know the world’s greatest artists in workshops specially designed with the young artist in mind. Classes are led by teaching artist, Jeni Battaglia Guidry and are for kids ages 6–12.
