Accident creates traffic nightmare
By Howell Dennis
The normally five-minute I-10 drive from Crowley to Rayne became a two-hour traffic nightmare for motorists as La. State Police were forced to shut down the interstate between Rayne and Duson due to an 18-wheeler accident. The 18-wheeler was carrying a hazardous material called ethyleneamine that could result in respiratory problems if inhaled. It was reported that a small amount of the chemical had leaked from the truck.
“Man, I could have made it to Beaumont in the time it took me just to get from Crowley to here,” said truck driver Tim Beaullieu. “That was ridiculous.”
Beaullieu along with several other 18-wheelers and other motorists were forced to take the Rayne exit to Hwy. 90 to continue their trip turning Hwy. 35 through Rayne into a virtual parking lot.
A Haz-Mat team from Port Allen was on the scene and as of 3 p.m. it was still unknown when the interstate would be reopened.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was reported to be unhurt. His identity was unknown as of press time. The truck was reported to be owned by Enterprise Trucking Comapny out of Houston, Texas.
