Accident slows traffic on I-49, deputy injured

The Opelousas Police Department has responded to a two-vehicle wreck on Interstate 49 this afternoon after a driver lost control of its vehicle and hit a St. Landry Parish Sheriff's deputy on the opposite side of the road.

Opelousas Police Chief Perry Gallow said the driver of the vehicle was going northbound on I-49 when he lost control of his vehicle and crossed the median and into the southbound lane.

A sheriff's deputy who was conducting a violator stop was struck by the vehicle.

The driver was trapped in his vehicle but the fire department was able to get him out. He suffered moderate to serious injuries, Gallow said, and was transported to a local hospital.

The sheriff's deputy suffered minor injuries and was also transported to the hospital.

Gallow said traffic is congested and at a standstill in some points. He said the interstate has not been closed at this point.

The crash remains under investigation.
