Amite’s next NFL Player – Antonio Baker

RUSTON – He was a quick learner in High School and he has become the top defensive player in the state of Louisiana in just three seasons. Antonio Baker is on his way to bigger and better things and he will be Amite’s next NFL Player.

Antonio Baker once help lead the Amite Warriors to the Class 3A State Championship back in 2004 and then after his senior season in 2005 he signed to play with the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in Ruston. He has been an impact player ever since for the Bulldogs.

Just last week Baker helped the Bulldogs win the 2008 Independence Bowl and he was also named the Louisiana Sports Writers Defensive Player of the Year among college teams and players in the state.

The 5-11, 200lb Junior Defensive Back has pro scouts asking about him and now they are starting to learn that he can play in the National Football League. Antonio has become one of the nation’s premiere Defensive Backs and he will be up for every major defensive award going into his senior season in 2009.

For the second straight season Baker led the Bulldogs in tackles by posting a team high 115 stops in 2008. Baker recorded 4.5 tackles for a loss and also was a ball hawking defender in the Bulldogs Secondary.

Antonio had four pass break ups this season, he intercepted three passes during his junior year and he also blocked a kick. Baker helped the Bulldogs beat Northern Illinois 17-10 last week in the Independence Bowl marking the first time that a Louisiana Tech Football Team has won eight or more games since the 1999 season.

Baker was also a First Team All-WAC Defensive Honoree for his solid play among teams in the Western Athletic Conference. Antonio is the Son of Carl Baker and Elaine Walker.
