Amite Police Chief Jerry Trabona warns public to beware

Due to a rash of thefts Amite Police Chief Jerry Trabona is warning the public to be careful of what they leave visible in their vehicles. Also there have been reports of stolen property that is left around the home.

On December 17, Officer Terry Zaffuto was patrolling on the north end of Duncan Avenue when he noticed a suspicious vehicle. Zaffuto reported that the driver of a beige Ford Taurus was exhibiting strange behavior. He watched the vehicle which eventually pulled onto Virginia Street and then into a driveway. The driver, identified as Steven Bond, 21 of Russell Town Road, Roseland, blew the vehicle's horn a couple of times and began to look around. Next, Bond got out of the vehicle and approached the home where four five gallon gas cans were visible. Bond was caught attempting to put the cans in his trunk. Zaffuto arrested Bonds and he was charged with simple theft, criminal trespassing, no driver's license and no registration in vehicle.

On Christmas day, Sergeant Jerome Johnson observed a vehicle that ran a stop sign at West Pine Street and Third Street. Johnson stopped the vehicle driven by a juvenile, and after a search of the vehicle found quite a few purses. The Amite Police have had a rash of reports of vehicle windows being broken by a brick and purses and other items being stolen off the seat. It has not been determined if the juvenile is the perpetrator who has committed any of the "purse thefts." For that reason, Chief Trabona would like the public to pay closer attention to what is left in plain view in their vehicles.

"Someone can walk by, bust a window and steal anything. Your purse may be in the seat with $2 in it, and the window is broken for that. If you are leaving anything in your vehicle, put it in your trunk or under the seat. Never leave it in plain view for someone to steal," said Chief Trabona.
