Amite Town Council decides to purchase new police station

Amite Police Chief Jerry Trabona has been working on finding a new location for the police station since the beginning of last year. He has explored different scenarios such as purchasing land and building a new facility or finding an existing building and modifying it to meet his requirements. He has chosen the latter.

In the agenda meeting of the Amite Town Council held Monday night, October 20 the council held a public hearing to hear pros and cons. The issue put to the public was "the purchase and renovation of 721 S. First Street for the Amite Police Station."

As of the meeting Trabona was waiting on FHA for paper work. It was discussed to set the loan for 40 years. To this Trabona stated, "That's fine, we're not gonna be here anyway."

Trabona also informed the council and audience that he is currently trying to get an ATM placed in front of the new building once it is complete. This would bring an income into the department and it also adds the element of safety to the citizens of Amite. Trabona stated that he had considered allowing some of the office space leased out. Also, Trabona is going to make sure the jail that is to be built in the new facility will be a bit larger to accommodate more Department of Corrections (DOC) prisoners which the state pays for. "Anywhere I can save money, I'm trying," stated Trabona.

Trabona informed the council that USDA Representative Bruce Bordelon estimated six months to a year to get the money needed for the station, then after the money is approved it will not take long to complete the building.

After the public hearing, during the regular agenda meeting, the Amite Town Council agreed to allow the purchase of the building, the renovations and approval for Trabona to apply for certain grants needed to fund the project.
