Annual blood drive to kick off Rice Festival week

By Katherine Miller

CROWLEY – On Monday, October 10, the annual International Rice Festival Blood Drive will occur. United Blood Services, along with Reed Amusements, JohnPac, Falcon Rice Mill and the Rice Festival Committee, are partnering to sponsor the annual event.

Each year, the drive is held as a memorial to Bill Williams and Shell Canter, as both were great promoters of donating blood and were instrumental in the development of the event.

The blood drive is to be held at the Rice Festival Building, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Each donor is to receive a bag of Country Boy Rice from Falcon Rice Mill and a special Rice Festival blood drive T-shirt courtesy of JohnPac, while the first 100 donors will receive a free ride bracelet, valued at $20.

“We always have a great turnout for this event. Our goal this year is to reach 100 donations,” said Jason Connor, Donor Recruitment Supervisor for United Blood Services. “We encourage anyone interested to come out and be a part of this life-saving event.”

Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be of good health. Additional height/weight requirements will apply to donors age 22 and under, and donors who are 16 must have signed permission from a parent or guardian. Each donor is to receive a thorough pre-donation interview, which includes temperature, pulse and blood pressure, as well as a medical history review. This blood will be available to help save lives locally within only three days of collection. “Also make sure to bring a picture ID,” Connor stated.
