The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. With funds raised by the Komen Race for the Cure Series, the Komen organization with its Affiliate Network is able to fund breast cancer research grants, meritorious awards and community outreach programs. Since its origination in Dallas, Texas, in 1982, the Komen Race for the Cure® Series has grown from one local Race with 800 participants to a national series of more than 100 Races with over 1.6 million people expected to participate in 2009.

The 2008 Acadiana Race was a huge success with more than 6,117 participants. In 2008, the Acadiana Affiliate granted out over $227,000 to local organizations aiding us in forwarding our mission. Enabling organizations such as the Acadia Council on Aging, Acadiana Medical Research Foundation, Faith House, Lafayette Community Health Care Clinic, Miles Perret Cancer Services, and Opelousas General Health System, and, Inc. to better serve the breast cancer needs of Acadiana is our priority. In addition, over $86,000 was sent to national headquarters to help energize science to find the cures.

This year’s honorary Race chairs are Ronnie and Paula Gibbens. Locally presented by the Breast Center of Acadiana and nationally presented by Yoplait, 2009 Media Partners include The Daily Advertiser, KATC TV3, KLFY TV10, 94.5 KSMB, 99.1 KXKC, 102.1 KQIS, and KOOL 106.7.
