Anti-litter group gets high marks

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Keep St. Martin Beautiful has received the Keep America Beautiful President’s Circle Award.

The award, presented at Keep America Beautiful’s 55th annual National Conference here, recognizes exemplary performance made by certified affiliates of the national nonprofit to reduce litter, minimize waste, and beautify and improve their local communities.

To qualify, KSMB had to conduct an annual “litter index,” calculate the affiliate’s cost-to-benefit ratio, and recruit volunteers to take responsibility for their community’s environment in addition to conducting activities in litter prevention, waste reduction, and beautification.

The Keep America Beautiful Litter Index is a tool used by KAB affiliates to measure litter from year to year, identify “hot spots,” and track their progress in remedying the problem.

In its cost/benefit analysis, KSMB returned a value of $8.86 in volunteer work, grants, litter cleanup operations, publicity and public education for each dollar of funding and in-kind support provided by parish government.

In addition to the support provided by St. Martin Parish Government in the form of part time personnel, office provisions, funding, equipment and labor, the Sheriff’s Office also provides labor and ongoing cleanup of roads.

KSMB’s board members are Ken Bordelon, Nick Breaux, Eddie Dumatrait, Noonie Guidry, Glenda Kately, Marian Melancon, Coatney Raymond and Larry Roy. Jacques Privat, employed by parish government, is the executive director.

Keep America Beautiful, established in 1953, is the nation’s largest volunteer-based community action organization with a network of nearly 1,000 affiliate and participating organizations.
