ASL’s Hunter Awareness Day held, youth awarded

The Acadiana Sportsmen’s League hosted the 29th Annual Hunter Awareness Day on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the police firing range in Crowley.

The free event was held between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. for children 15 years and younger.

A number of activities were enjoyed, including a BB gun shooting contest, archery classes by the Bayou State Bow Hunters Association, and a free skeet show for all adults in attendance along with their children.

Other events included learning about the D.A.R.E “Just Say No” program, visit with Acadiana Ambulance, and learned safe hunting skills, safe shooting skills, and respect for wildlife and the environment.

Louisiana Wild Turkey Federation members were also in attendance to answer any questions about hunting wild turkey in Louisiana.

Ducks Unlimited was also on hand to award door prizes and Green Wing memberships.

Participants were provided free food and drinks, awarded shirts along with hundreds of dollars in prizes.

Winners in their age groups were:

9-and-under - 1st place Christian Breaux, 2nd place Ryan Trahan, 3rd place Jace Freeman.

10-12 years - 1st place Madison Ardoin, 2nd place Christian Thibodaux, 3rd place Kaden Runner.

13-15 years - 1st place Hunter Chesson, 2nd place Jon Benoit, 3rd place Tyler Menard.

Special thanks are also expressed to Bayou State Bow Hunters, La. Wild Turkey Federation, the City of Crowley for providng the firing range for the event, and the many donors who provided needed refreshments and assistance for the day-long event for the youth in attendance.
