Assistant Principal search on again at IHS

Iota High once again has a vacancy at assistnat principal following a unanimous decision at Wednesday night’s special session of the Acadia Parish School Board.

At the Board’s normal June meeting the decision was made to move forward with a search for an instructional assistant. However, following rumors of “under the table” deals, the board resinded its move and once again began searching for an assistant principal.

Board Member Milton Simar began the comments by apologizing for the move. Rumors almost immediately began surfacing that Simar was trying to get one of his family members the job. Simar denied the accusation at the special session stating that he had completely removed himself from the process.

“The reason we wanted an instructional assistant was to take a better look at curriculum,” explained Simar.

According to Simar, Iota High’s test scores had dropped in the past few years and believed that because the Assistant Principal had so many other duties, curriculum was being put to the side.

“We’ll move forward with the assistant principal search and hope that they can also give the curriculum attention,” said Simar.

As the comments were drawing to a close, Board Member Gene Daigle stated that he believed it may be time for the school board to look over all the schools in the parish.

“We have a school in Mire with 500 enrollment that could probably use another administrator while schools with smaller enrollment may have too much,” said Daigle. “Maybe it’s time we look at all the schools.”

The school board immediately opened up the applications process and will accept applications through June 30. The board will do interviews on July 1 and the new assistance principal will be named at the board’s next meeting, July 5. Superintendent John E. Bourque wants to get someone in place at Iota High as soon as possible.

“We don’t want to drag our feet here,” said Bourque.
