Attorney says accused child-seller no monster

The attorney for a woman charged with kidnapping two children, then selling them for a bird and $175, says there is no truth to the charges and his client is no monster.

Timmy J. Fontenot of Mamou also said he and his client Donna Greenwell of Pitkin are “saddened” by the actions of investigators and some media regarding the case.

“The biological mother of these children, Jennifer Brown, brought these children to Donna in late 2007 or early 2008, because she was unable to take care of them herself.”

“Immediately upon taking physical custody of these children, Donna sought out medical treatment for the children and began caring for these children.

“In August of 2008, the biological mother, Jennifer Brown, signed a custody agreement giving custody of these children to Donna so Donna could enroll them in school. Any competent investigation would have clearly shown these facts.

“As to the allegation of the sale of children, that is also completely false. Donna was simply trying to find a good home for children abandoned to her care, and the facts will substantiate this,” Fontenot said in a prepared statement.

A Eunice-area couple was also charged with kidnapping for allegedly buying the boy and girl in question.

Fontenot said a television report that police said Greenwell is a prior sex offender “is completely false.”

“Jennifer Potter of the Glenmora Police Department went so far as to say “there could be more out there,” again leading the public to believe my client is a monster.

“It is a shame that they felt the need to try this case in the media before compiling all of the facts. We are confident that when a proper investigation is completed, and then brought to a courtroom, Donna will be exonerated.”

Potter is the officer who brought her suspicions regarding Greenwell to the attention of Eunice police, who in turn contacted the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Department.
