Baker man dies in Zachary wreck
According to Zachary Police Chief John Herty, on Wednesday, December 3, William Browning, 78, of Baker, died as a result of injuries he sustained in a three-vehicle collision near the intersection of Angus Drive and Plank Road. At approximately 2:30 p.m., Sharon Smith, 49, of Baton Rouge, was traveling northbound on Plank Road in a Lincoln Continental when she failed to stop and rear-ended a Honda Accord that was already stopped on Plank Road. The Honda, driven by Elseddra Johnson, was preparing to turn left onto Angus Drive. The impact knocked Johnson's car into the southbound lane and into the path of a Toyota Camry that was approaching the same intersection. The Toyota Camry, driven by Jo Cayer, collided with Johnson's car at which time the passenger in the backseat, Browning, was injured and immediately transported to Lane Regional Medical Center where he later died, according to Herty's report. Herty said the victim was being returned to his residence at a nursing home when the accident occurred.
Also, a child in Johnson's vehicle was ejected at the time of the crash, but sustained only non-life-threatening injuries. Two other children in the vehicle were treated for minor injuries and Johnson suffered a broken leg in the accident. Although the crashes are still under investigation, Herty said Smith has multiple charges pending of negligent injury and one count of negligent homicide.
