BCS Title Game should be a good one!
Many in the Lone Star State are not very happy with the BCS Standings this week as the Oklahoma Sooners jumped the Longhorns two weeks ago and the Florida Gators did it this week after their win over Alabama.
Texas does have a legit beef as they beat the Boomer Sooners 45-35 head to head earlier this season. But I think the poll is fair and the BCS got it right. Oklahoma and Florida are the two best teams in my eyes and I felt that way for a long time this season.
Does Texas deserve a shot at the national title? Yes! But so does Alabama, USC, Texas Tech, Penn State and throw in a 12-0 Utah team to the fray as well. This season would be very interesting if there was a playoff among the top eight teams.
We can only hope that one day NCAA Division I-A Football is still the only sport that does not produce its champion with a tournament/playoff format. I am not saying that there are a bunch of teams that could win the title what I am saying is that a bunch of teams deserve a shot at the title.
And if that ever takes place then I think we as fans of college football could be satisfied. Just a little more anyway!
The Big Chief’s Top 10
Florida (12-1) – The Gators are back in the title game for the second time in three seasons after a win over the Tide and they did so without Percy Harvin. Isn’t it amazing how no one in Gainesville mentions the name of the “ole ball coach” anymore? Urban is the man in Gatorland! Last week beat Alabama 31-20 / next vs Oklahoma in National Championship.
Oklahoma (12-1) – The Sooners are now just one win away from the National Title. Sam Bradford will go down as one of the greatest CFB players ever. He will be playing against the best in the game now when he looks at #15 from the Gators! Last week beat Missouri 62-21 in the Big XII Title Game / next vs Florida in National Championship.
Alabama (12-1) – Nick Saban and his Tide Coaching Staff had an excellent game plan against the Gators but they came up short. A cake walk in the Sugar Bowl should help Tide Fans get over the loss to Florida and then another top recruiting class comes in early February. No one should be surprised at Bama’s quick climb back to the top of CFB. Last week lost to Florida 31-20 / next vs Utah in Sugar Bowl.
Texas (11-1) – Oh if the Big XII has decent tie breaking rules who knows the Longhorns could have landed in the title game. Oh well! Next vs Ohio State in Fiesta Bowl.
USC (11-1) – The Trojans are starting to find out that if they don’t go undefeated then they will not play for the national title as the rest of the nation’s media is starting to understand that the Pac-10 is not that good! Last week beat UCLA 28-7 / Next Rose Bowl vs Penn State January 1st 2009.
Penn State (11-1) – The Lions have earned a trip to the Grand Daddy of them all but could get embarrassed by an angry USC Trojans Team. For Joe Pa’s sake I hope not! Next Rose Bowl January 1st 2009.
Texas Tech (11-1) – The Red Raiders are Cotton Bowl Bound where they will face a very good Ole Miss Team. But the bigger question is weather or not Coach Mike Leach will stay at Tech or look elsewhere! Next vs Ole Miss in Cotton Bowl.
Boise State (12-0) – The Broncos deserve to be in a much better bowl than the Poinsettia Bowl. This team has only lost a handful of games in the last couple of seasons and they proved two years ago they belong in bigger bowls with a win over Oklahoma. It’s a shame that this group is not in a better bowl. With that said watch out for a dangerous TCU club! Next vs TCU in Poinsettia Bowl.
Utah (12-0) – Well Utah is back in the BCS but this time they have a legit opponent in Alabama. Utah will prove that at large teams from non-BCS Schools just don’t have enough to compete with the big boys. The Tide will roll hard in this one. Next vs Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.
Ohio State (10-2) – Buckeyes could prove a lot with a win over Texas. Many feel that Texas deserves to be in the title game and the Buckeyes lost to two teams that have a combined record of 22-2. This is not a bad team. Next vs Texas in Fiesta Bowl.
