Bears, Bulldogs grab key wins
The Church Point Bears rolled to a 48-34 road win over Northwest in the District 5-3A opener on Thursday.
The Iota Bulldogs continued their winning ways Friday night with a thrilling 33-32 victory at Jena.
After trailing 7-6 early in the game, Church Point exploded for 22 points in the second quarter and then added 20 more points in the fourth quarter in an showing that produced 534 yards of total offense for the game.
But the Raiders scored 27 points in the fourth stanza to keep the game close.
Joseph Carter led Church Point with 205 yards rushing on 20 carries including a 81-yard touchdown run in the second period.
Von Duplechin added 169 yards on 17 carries and scored on runs of 8, 6, 11 and 81 yards for the Bears.
Iota out scored Jena 19-12 in the final period including a 63-yard pass from Chad Abshire to Jordan Sylestine with 2:54 left in the fourth to grab the win.
Abshire completed 8-of-13 passes for 228 yards with three touchdowns for the Bulldogs. He also scored on a four yard run in the second period.
