PERKINSTON, Miss. – The LSU at Eunice Bengals split a doubleheader Monday, trouncing Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in a 14-1 mercy-rule decision in the opener but narrowly dropping a 4-3 decision in the nightcap.

The Bengals (25-4) came out strong at the start of the opener, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning, loading the bases with only one out before Brady Bourque nailed a 3-RBI double out to deep center field.

Bourque later scored on a passed ball, and Nate Peterson doubled to score another run.

Boomer Blanchard tripled in the top of the second, and scored on another passed ball.

Kellen Bozeman hit a solo home run to left to help LSUE pick up three runs in the top of the third.

The Bengals picked up two more runs in the fourth inning before MGCCC scored their sole run on a solo homer from designated hitter Jacob Daniel, reducing LSUE’s lead to 11-1.

The Bengals added three insurance runs in the top of the fifth to seal the mercy-rule win.

Matt Creel (2-0) pitched all five innings for the Bengals, giving up one earned run off of two hits and three walks. Creel struck out four batters out of 18 at-bats.

In the nightcap, MGCCC took the lead early, going 2-1 over LSUE by the end of the second inning, before the Bengals tied the score in the top of the fourth.

LSUE took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth, and held it until the bottom of the seventh, when MGCCC scored two runs for the win.

Reliever Josh Bailey (0-2) took the loss, giving up two earned runs off of five hits in four-and-two-thirds innings on the mound. Bailey walked no batters while striking out two.

On Friday, LSUE begins a three-game weekend series against Delgado Community College, with the first game beginning at 6:30 p.m.
