Bergeron earns 5 stars

By Staff Sgt. Rachel A. Hall

Minden – Louisiana National Guard Youth Challenge cadet and Arnaudville native Todd J. Bergeron, was recently awarded the rank of five stars, most outstanding of his platoon, and was recognized for completing 76 hours of community service.

According to post residential coordinator retired Master Sgt. Ronnie H. Dollar, the Youth Challenge Program (YCP) has proven to be a successful tool for parents with troubled teens. The program consists of a five-month residential phase and a 12-month post- residential phase. The teens decide for themselves if they want to attend the program. Once enrolled in the program cadets have the opportunity to earn their GED and acquire skills that will help them be more successful after graduation.

The rank of five stars is based on cadet’s academic accomplishments, physical fitness, and a clear discipline record. Bergeron was also chosen as most outstanding for his platoon. This award is selected by the cadre of each platoon and is based on the cadet who performs his/her best in being a leader and a follower. Bergeron was also recognized for completing 76 hours of community service to include: habitat for humanity building renovation program, urban restoration projects, volunteer work at the Shreveport/Bossier homeless shelter, and volunteered to participate in numerous blood drives at the Louisiana Blood Bank.

Bergeron joined the YCP last February and was able to achieve many awards at YCP and gain respect from his friends and family. Bergeron is a reflection of the good things the YCP instills in young people.

“I came to YCP to better myself and get a heads up on life and the Army, I was able to achieve many outstanding things throughout the five months I was here,” said Bergeron.

Bergeron is the son of Frank L. and Kathy F. Bergeron of Arnaudville. He graduated from the YCP on July 26 and plans to enlist in the U.S. Army active duty as a light infantry soldier.
