Big 3rd quarter leads Tigers to easy win over Cowboys!
HOMECOMING- Homecoming Games are fun to be a part of for all of those who are not in the coaching profession. Ask any coach at any level and they will quickly tell you that is the case when it comes to football and Homecoming Games.
Last week the Independence Tigers celebrated Homecoming with a 46-10 win over the Jewel Sumner Cowboys. But the first half was a tough hard fought contest by both teams with the Tigers dominating the entire second half of the game.
After a scoreless first quarter both teams seemed to settle down in the second quarter. Reggie Sims got the Tigers on the board in the second quarter when he scored on a four-yard run and with the James Cervantes PAT the Tigers led 7-0.
But credit the Cowboys as they hung tough and played hard and made a game of it in the first half. Sumner tied the game later in the second quarter when Jordan Griffin scored on a nine-yard run and with the PAT the game was tied at 7-7.
Sumner had the ball in the Tigers end of the field several times in the first half but Independence’s Defense played solid in the Red Zone allowing only ten points in the game. The Tigers limited the Cowboys to just four first downs and 98-yards of total offense in the game.
Sumner then claimed the lead over the Tigers when they got a 22-yard field goal from Nehemia Warren to take a surprising 10-7 lead in the second quarter. But then as soon as it looked like it was going to be a tight game the Tigers came right back with a play that changed the entire course of the game.
Josh Williams returned the ensuing kickoff 85-yards for a touchdown and the Tigers took a 14-10 lead in with them at the half. From that point on the Tigers outscored the Cowboys 39-0 the rest of the game.
Independence racked up 462-yards of total offense and they got another huge Special Teams Touchdown when Darren Arline returned a punt 60-yards for a score. The Tigers scored twenty-five points in the third quarter to put the game away and they added one more TD in the fourth with a Reggie Sims 10-yard run.
With the 46-10 win over Sumner the Tigers are now 6-2 overall on the season and 3-1 in District 10-3A play. Independence entered last week tied for 10th in the Class 3A power ratings and with a win over Loranger along with a John Ehert win over West Jeff the Tigers could creep close to the top six or seven in the class 3A power ratings.
