Big Chief ~ BCS got it right! At least this week they did

Many in the Lone Star State are not very happy with the BCS Standings this week as the Oklahoma Sooners jumped the Longhorns to move into the #2 spot in the BCS and by rule will represent the Big XII South in the Big XII Title game against Missouri this weekend.

Texas does have a legit beef as they beat the Boomer Sooners 45-35 head to head earlier this season. But I think the poll is fair this week and the BCS got it right. Oklahoma and Florida are the two best teams in my eyes and I felt that way for a long time this season.

And if they (Florida and OU) truly are the best then they should take care of business this week and advance to the National Title Game. But I strongly caution those who think that this race is over. The simple scenario is that Alabama wins and they get in as the undefeated #1 team in the nation.

But what happens if Bama losses and Missouri upsets Oklahoma, which one loss team gets in then? Could Texas get into the National Title Game without even playing for their conference title?

It will happen if Oklahoma loses. And that is another reason that some type of playoff format has to be instilled in this wacky sport of I-A football, which is the only sport in collegiate athletics that does not determine its champion with a playoff or tournament format.

And what about Utah and Boise State shouldn’t they at least be given a shot? Under the current format I agree that they don’t belong in the Title Game but I do believe that they deserve to prove that they can be among the nation’s so called elite teams. Heck Boise State proved that a couple of seasons ago with their remarkable Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma.

As imperfect as the current system is you have to admit it keeps us intrigued and wanting more and more being in the form of a playoff or plus one model or something. But until that day arrives we will have to settle for what we have right now and that’s not too bad!

The Big Chief’s Top 10

Alabama (12-0) – Nick Saban is on fire in Tuscaloosa right now. He’s undefeated and he just beat Auburn 36-0. Can it get any better? Yes it can!! Last week beat Auburn 36-0 / this week vs Florida in SEC Title Game.

Florida (11-1) – The Gators can get back to the title game for the second time in three seasons with a win over the Tide. Can they do it without Percy Harvin? Don’t worry Florida has plenty of mustard on both sides of the ball. Last week beat Florida State 45-15 / this week vs Alabama in SEC Title Game.

Oklahoma (11-1) – The Sooners are now just one win away from playing either Alabama or Florida in the National Title Game. Last week beat Oklahoma State 64-41 / this week vs Missouri in the Big XII Title Game.

Texas (11-1) – The Longhorns must now pull for Missouri in order to land in the title game. Oh well! Last week beat Texas A&M 49-9 / next TBD.

USC (10-1) – The Trojans will need some teams to lose but they could be in the right place at the right time depending on what happens in the Big XII over the next few weeks. Last week beat Notre Dame 38-3 / this week @ UCLA.

Penn State (11-1) – The Lions have earned a trip to the Grand Daddy of them all and would need a miracle to get into the title game! Last week beat Michigan State 49-18 / next Rose Bowl January 1st 2009.

Texas Tech (11-1) – The Red Raiders got embarrassed last week and they are probably Cotton Bowl Bound. Look for the Red Raiders to lick their wounds this week against the Bears. Last week beat Baylor 35-28 / next TBD.

Boise State (12-0) – The Broncos could be back in the BCS with a win over the Bulldogs this week. Last week beat Fresno State 61-10 / next TBD.

Utah (12-0) – Can two Non BCS Schools get into BCS Games? If it is ever going to happen it will this bowl season! Next TBD.

Ohio State (10-2) – Buckeyes could be an attractive at large team but I think they will play Georgia in the Capital One Bowl. Next TBD
