Blood donors needed during January
Nearly every day in the United States, 39,000 units of blood are required to help hospitals and emergency treatment facilities for patients with various diseases, such as cancer as well as those who are the victims of accidents.
During the busy holiday season, blood donation is typically not an activity that many people have on their to-do list.
Typically, due to a lack of donations during the month of December, blood supplies in January are left at critical levels. It is estimated that someone in the United States needs blood every three seconds, and that one of every three people will need it before the age of 72.
In order to donate blood, a person must meet the following requirements: you must be at least 17 years of age and weigh at least 110 pounds, be healthy, not on antibiotics, and without fever for at least one day prior to donating.
Giving blood takes only 45 minutes, and with each pint donated, up to three lives may be saved.
