Branch resident celebrates 90th birthday
Maryland Chapel CME Church in Branch was the setting on April 11, 2010 for a birthday party held in honor of Sister Virginia “Peggy” Young Yokum, who clebrated her 90th birthday among family, friends and her church family.
Mrs. Yokum was born April 10, 1920.
Sister Yokum is a life-long resident of Branch who now resides in Lafayette with her daughter and son-in-law, Geneva and James Jenkins, due to her health.
Guests attended from Rayne, Branch, Crowley, Church Point and Lafayette.
Those in attendance enjoyed sandwiches, meatballs, hot wings, deviled eggs, punch, and a special white birthday cake accented with yellow trim and noted with the birthday honoree’s picture.
She was a very active member of Maryland Chapel and still belongs to several auxiliares.
She was married to the late Brother Joseph Yokum for 67 years.
She is the mother of four children, Dolores Batiste (Walter) of Los Angeles, CA; Geneva Jenkins (James), Ronnie Faye Taylor, all of Lafayette; and one son, the late Rodney Yokum.
She is also the grandmother of five and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Yokum reads her Bible daily and is very prayful, enjoys phone calls, and visits from family and friends.
