Breaux Bridge collects record sales tax in December

By Ken Grissom

BREAUX BRIDGE – Sales tax receipts collected in January for the month of December exceeded $200,000 for the first time in the city’s history.

Mayor Jack Dale Delhomme said he thinks it would have topped $300,000 if a newly approved taxing district for the I-10 corridor had been in effect.

In November, Breaux Bridge became the first municipality in the state to set up a special commercial taxing district that will benefit the entire community. It was thought those taxes would start being collected in January, but it has been delayed until March.

Record sales tax collection might fly in the face of the national recession but regionally it was no anomaly. In Broussard, with a new Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Walgreen’s sprouting right next to U.S. 90, December’s receipts topped $821,000, more than 16 percent over the same period last year.

Scott’s tax revenue rose by 10 percent in December. December sales were up 8 percent in Carencro.

Youngsville and Lafayette proper both saw declines.
