Breaux Bridge hosts garden clubs
The Breaux Bridge Garden Club hosted the annual meeting for District III of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation Thursday, Oct. 30, at Marielle’s in Breaux Bridge. Each club hosts the meeting on a rotating basis, a cycle that takes 12 years.
The Breaux Bridge Garden Club is the youngest member of the District and hosted the meeting for the first time. An estimated 125 members from Lafayette, New Iberia, St. Martinville, Gueydan, Thibodeaux, Houma, Franklin, Patterson, Berwick and Morgan City attended.
Guest speaker was Dan Gill, spokesman for the LSU AgCenter’s "Get It Growing" project, a statewide educational effort in home horticulture utilizing radio, Internet, TV and newsprint. Gill is coauthor of the "Louisiana Gardener’s Guide" and author of "Month-by-Month Gardening in Louisiana."
His presentation was be on keeping your flower gardens colorful from October to May with cool-season bedding plants. Many frost-tolerant bedding plants can be planted in the fall to provide outstanding color in the fall, winter and spring landscape. Dan discussed what to consider when planting a cool-season flower garden, and cover how to grow the most reliable and popular plants to use.
