Burke descendants attend 2009 Family Reunion
The 51st Burke family reunion was recently held in Indian Bayou including the descendants of the late Mary Matilda Denniston and Charles Mitchell Burke of the Ridge community.
The first Burke family reunion was held at the home of Katie Burke and Lawrence Hoffpauir in Ridge in June of 1958 on Father’s Day of that year. The grand event included the attendance of the surviving Burke children and their families.
Charles and Mary were the parents of William Grove, John Elias, Caroline Elizabeth, Ebenezer Denniston, Flora Auguita, Marvin, Mary Ella, Charles Henry, Thomas Jefferson and Katherine “Katie” Cole.
Mary was born in Morgan City on June 20, 1853, and Charles on May 6, 1849 near Berlin, Germany. He imigrated to the United States in 1867. The couple married and resided in Ridge until their passing.
Still in 2009, family members come from far and wide for the annual reunion some 50 years later, celebrating the union of Charles and Mary Burke, and taking pride in their heritage.
Reunion committee members were Caryll Foreman, Sue Cole, Guy Foreman, Jeanne Foreman and Debby Simon.
Everyone in attendance enjoyed the barbecue menu including the main entree along with all the trimmings.
Almost 100 descendants and their guests were in attendance from numerous points of Louisiana and Texas.
Honored during the reunion were:
Hayden Joseph Abshire, youngest male in attendance at 10 months of age.
Nevaeh Danielle Abshire, youngest female in attendance at two years of age.
Hayden and Nevaeh are children of Debby and Lance Abshire of Kaplan.
Leon Foreman of Indian Bayou, eldest male in attendance.
Florrie Lee Duplant of Port Arthur, Texas, eldest female in attendance.
Richard and Shannon Cole, traveled the farthest to attend the reunion from Houston, Texas.
The next Burke family reunion has been scheduled for October 31, 2010.
