BUS CRASH UPDATE: One child dies, second child remains in critical condition
PORT BARRE - One of the two students that remained in critical condition over the weekend died today.
Karen "Kare Bear" Stoute, 5, died Monday at Lafayette General Medical Center. She was a kindergarten student.
Following the St. Landry Parish School Bus crash that was rear-ended by an 18-wheeler on Highway 190 on Friday, Stoute was transported by AirMed to Lafayette General in critical condition with severe brain trauma.
She was one of 21 students on board the bus.
Six counselors are working with students at Port Barre High School. Four of those counselors were brought in from other schools.
A 15-year-old boy also critically injured in the crash remains in the ICU at LGMC.
According to Lafayette General, Colby Richard, 15, is in critical, but stable condition.
He underwent a second surgery for his leg this morning.
Both children's parents are thanking the community for their support and prayers.
A fund has been set up for Colby at American Bank and Trust. Donations can be made anywhere in Acadiana.
