Calvin Borel notches 4,500 wins

Louisville, Ky. – Catahoula’s Calvin Borel became the 34th jockey in North American racing to reach the 4,500-win plateau when he guided Screen Your Friend to a 1 1/4-length victory over a fast-closing Lyin’ Heart in the 107th running of the $164,550 Bashford Manor Stakes for 2-year-olds at Churchill Downs.

Screen Your Friend gave Borel his second victory in the Bashford Manor. Borel had won the race in 2000 aboard Duality.

“It feels so good,” Borel said. “This is all I’ve wanted to do my whole life. I knew sooner or later we’d get to this number; it was just a matter of time.

“My daddy always told me that if that’s what you want, you’ve got to go get it. And that’s what I wanted. I’ve had a good career and I got lucky and won the Derby – that was the icing on the cake. Now I’m just enjoying myself.”

Breaking from the rail, Screen Your Friend shot to the lead with longshot General Quarters in closest pursuit through the first quarter-mile in 21.64.

General Quarters, ridden by Bill Troilo, briefly inched ahead on the far turn but Borel, saving ground on the inside, regained command at the head of the stretch in 45.30 and surged to a three-length lead at midstretch with enough left to hold off Lyin’ Heart and Corey Lanerie.

A homebred son of Friends Lake, Screen Your Friend covered the six furlongs in 1:10.84 over a fast track in winning for the second time in four starts and boosting his career earnings to $138,306 with the winner’s check of $99,981.

Sent off at odds of 18-1 in the field of seven, Screen Your Friend returned mutuels of $38, $13 and $4.80. Lyin’ Heart paid $4.20 and $2.60 while his Steve Asmussen-trained stablemate Segal ran third.
