Cancer Survivor's Day event to be held

CROWLEY – This Sunday, June 7, Oncologistics, Inc., a leading provider of radiation oncology throughout Louisiana and Mississippi, is holding their 16th Annual National Cancer Survivor’s Day event.
The event will be held at the River Oaks Catering and Event Center at 520 East Kaliste Saloom Rd. in Lafayette.
According to Donna Delahoussaye, the business development coordinator for Oncologistics, the afternoon will be one filled with food, fun and laughter.
“We already have 456 people that have RSVP’ed for the event,” said Delahoussaye. “I’m was thinking to myself I hope we can handle all those people but I believe that’s a great problem to have.”
Oncologistics has centers in Crowley, Lafayette, Morgan City, New Iberia, Opelousas, and Laurel, Miss. They pride themselves on following their motto - “treating cancer personally, intelligently and locally.”
Dr. Andrew Harwood has been working out of the Crowley office, located at 1108 E. 8th St., for the past twenty years. He said that this weekend’s celebration is also due to the fact that the treatment of cancer has been much more successful in recent years. He did mention, however, that the people of south Louisiana have a higher rate of cancer than most areas in the country.
“I’m afraid we are a victim of ‘laissez le bon temps rouler’,” said Harwood. “With all the smoking, drinking and eating of spicy foods we see many more cases of throat and esophageal cancer than the rest of the country.”
Harwood, whose English accent makes him very pleasant to speak with, says that his office will treat any cancer patient regardless of whether they are insured.
“We never turn a cancer patient away,” he said. “We will treat any patient whether they have insurance or not.”
The festivities this Sunday will be held from 11 a.m. til 3 p.m.
