Career Connections Expo slated for Feb. 2nd
The Career Connections Expo, the annual event presented by the Acadia Parish School Board, will be presented by the cities of Crowley and Rayne and the Acadia Parish Chambers of Commerce. Slated for Tuesday, February 2, the expo will be held at the Crowley Rice Festival Building, 717 West Mill Street. This one-day, tradeshow style event is an opportunity for local business and community leaders to interact with eighth and tenth grade students from throughout the parish. By interacting with local business people, students are provided an opportunity to explore a variety of career options and become more informed of the day to day tasks involved in many jobs. Together businesses and schools will reinforce the importance of furthering education and the realities of the workforce. This is an invaluable lesson that allows students to invest in and plan for their futures. Through pre– and post– event classroom exercises, students will focus on the training necessary for their chosen career, the skills required to perform these tasks, and the advantages and fulfillment their role models found within their field of work.
The Expo will also feature a Reality Store designed to make students aware of the realities of living expenses and the relationship between quality of life and their educational and career choices. An exhibit area will feature student selections for homes, transportation and daily living needs. The cost of food, financing, utilities, medical care, childcare, and insurance are explored and explained.
More than 1500 students from public and private schools in Church Point, Crowley, Iota, Rayne, and surrounding areas will participate in this year’s event. Through the Career Connections Expo, businesses are invited to share their knowledge and experience with students from throughout Acadia Parish by providing an interactive exhibit that will give them some insight into various professions. To reserve a space for your business, please contact the Crowley Chamber of Commerce at 337-788-0177. More information and registration forms can be found on the Chamber’s website, www.crowleychamber.com.
This event would not be possible without the support and sponsorship of the business community, including the City of Crowley, Crowley Rotary Club, Francis Drilling Fluids, KAJN Radio/Family Vision TV, Rice Palace, Senator Dan “Blade” Morrish, and SWLA Center for Health Services. Organizers are in need of a number of community volunteers to make the event run smoothly. If you are interesting in assisting, please contact the Chamber, 337-788-0177. Those putting on the Expo would like to thank those who support education in Acadia Parish.
