Carrier inducted into La. Sports Hall of Fame

NATCHITOCHES – Former Church Point star Mark Carrier has earned numerous accolades over his prestigious football career that included All American honors while at Nicholls State and a 12-year NFL career.

But Carrier’s enshrinement into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame is one accomplishment he will always cherish.

“Without a doubt this is a big honor,” said Carrier, who was introduced at the induction ceremony by his 14-year-old son, John Mark Carrier. “In a million years I never imagined that this would happen. You just play the game you love and try to do your best and try to be the best. This is just icing on the cake.”

Carrier joined fellow Nicholls standout Larry Wilson along with prep football coaching legends J.T. Curtis and Lee Hedges, Louisiana Tech women’s basketball star Teresa Weatherspoon, LSU baseball great Ben McDonald, former NBA star Orlando Woolride and former Louisiana-Monroe backetball coach Mike Vining as the latest class to be inducted into the Hall of Fame Saturday at the Natchitoches Events Center.

Carrier’s path to the Hall of Fame started at Church Point High School, but he made a name for himself as an All-American receiver at Nicholls. During his senior season in 1986, he finished with 76 catches for 1,513 yards and 20 touchdowns.

That type of production led Carrier to the NFL where he was selected in the third round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Carrier played 12 seasons in the NFL, logging stints with the Buccaneers, the Cleveland Browns and the Carolina Panthers. He finished his career with 596 receptions for 8,763 yards and 48 touchdowns, which included a Pro Bowl season with the Bucs in 1989.

“We don’t always need to be the best,” Carrier said while reflecting on his life and career. “What’s important is that we try our best.”
