Cecilia faces move up to District 5-4A

BATON ROUGE – The Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) has begun its biennial reclassification process which takes into account changes in enrollments at its member school.

Based on these changes, the LHSAA will reclassify those schools which have either lost or gained enrollment.

The first of three possible reclassification meetings was held last week and high school principals in attendance raised no objections to a plan which will affect Cecilia High School, moving the Bulldogs from Class AAA up to Class AAAA.

The reclassification plan is not expected to be finalized until March 25.

Under the proposal presented last week, District 5-4A, which includes Breaux Bridge and St. Martinville, would lose Abbeville, which is dropping down to Class 3A. Cecilia would then join the district, which is also made up of Beau Chene, Northside, Opelousas and Teurlings Catholic.

Most of the teams in Cecilia’s current District 6-3A would be moved to a “new” District 5-3A and include Abbeville, Catholic of New Iberia, Erath, Kaplan and North Vermilion.

The “new” District 6-3A would be the current District 7-3A – Berwick, Franklin, Patterson, West St. Mary and E.D. White.

CHS head football coach Terry Martin said he could see the change coming, although the average Cecilia enrollment falls just 15 students above the Class 4A threshold, making the school one of the smallest in the district.

“It’s certainly going to be a more physical schedule for us,” he commented Monday. “It’ll really be a grind, especially late in the season. And we’re looking at having to replace 17 of our 22 starters from our 2008 team, so we’ve really got our work cut out for us.”

Two of the District 5-4A teams — Breaux Bridge and St. Martinville — are familiar foes for the Bulldogs, and Cecilia has faced Northside in a pre-season scrimmage for the past several years.

Martin said he will be working on the 2009 schedule as soon as the redistricting plan is finalized, lining up non-district opponent for the season’s first three games and an open date during week six.
