Champion runner to join in benefit 5K run

First Baptist Church of Eunice is holding the second annual Five Loaves, Two Fish 5K run on Saturday, Feb. 14.
The 1 mile kid’s fun run and the 5K walk will begin at 8 a.m., while the 5K run is set for 8:30 a.m.
The race will begin and end at First Baptist Church located at 311 S. Third Street.
According to race organizer David Harper this year’s event will be highlighted by the appearance of 2007 NCAA Division I cross country national champion Josh McDougal who will participate in the run as well as share his life story at the post-race breakfast.
McDougal, an 11-time All-American from Liberty University, defeated Olympian Galen Rupp in 2007 and has a 13:20 personal record in the 5K.
There were more than 150 participants last year with even more expected this year, Harper said.
“We should have significantly more this year because of Josh McDougal is joining us for the race,” he pointed out. “He is the fastest man in cross country and we will have him right here in Eunice.
“It is pretty cool to have a national champion come to our neighborhood.”
The pre-registration cost is $18 for students and Cajun Road Runners Club members. Walk-ups will pay $20 the morning of the race.
“We sent out letters to all the area high school cross country coaches and they told their runners whom they thought would be interested in this event,” he said. “They all knew who Josh McDougal is.”
This year the race benefits the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. Last year the event raised $3543.83 for the Eunice Community Food Bank.
The top three finishers in each division will be recognized including 12-under, 13-18, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64 and 65-over.
According to the FBC Web site, last year’s overall winners included Jake O’Brien of Eunice (19:58) and Christy Hebert of Pineville (25:13).
Other winners were Cole Hebert (kid’s fun run 6:36); Kent Aguillard (first male walker 40:02), Mary Ann O’Brien (first female walker 40:04), Wayne Richard (first senior male walker 41:53) and Elsie Carroll (first senior female walker 44:02).
