Church Point defense grabs Grid Stars top honor

CROWLEY – In one of the biggest games of the season thus far, the Church Point Bears’ defense rose to the challenge last Friday.

The Bears, playing host to District 5-3A and Acadia Parish rival Rayne, limited the Wolves’ normally potent offense to just 174 total yards and seven first downs in a 27-12 victory over the Wolves.

That defensive performance was more than enough to grab top honors on this week’s edition of Grid Stars.

Church Point’s defense, which forced a turnover on Rayne’s opening drive of the game, held the Wolves’ to just 104 yards on the ground and gave up just one big play on the night, a 53-yard pass play right before the half that set up a touchdown.

The Bears also had little to no problems offensively, racking up 317 total yards and 14 first downs.

Jacob Boone carried much of the load in the victory, rushing 20 times for 170 yards and three touchdowns. He also had two receptions for 17 yards.

For Rayne, Jalen Williams and Clarence Leger earned honors.

Williams paced the Wolves’ ground attack with 62 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries while Leger ran for 29 yards and a score on nine carries. He also completed three passes for 70 yards.

Also earning recognition this week are Notre Dame’s Waylon Young, Iota’s Brandon Fantroy and Crowley High’s Andre Mills and Davante Bourque.

Young was nearly perfect through the air Friday, completing eight of 11 pass attempts for 165 yards and two touchdowns in the Pios’ 34-7 District 4-3A victory over Westlake . He hit Blake Miller on a 60-yard scoring strike late in the third and then connected with Josef Schmid on a 26-yard touchdown pass midway through the third quarter. Young also scored on a 3-yard touchdown scamper.

Fantroy was once again Iota’s leading rusher in the Bulldogs’ 39-14 victory over Pine Prairie. The junior tailback picked up 191 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries.

Mills and Bourque were two of the few bright spots for Crowley Friday in the Gents’ 21-0 loss to District 4-3A foe Jennings .

Mills paced the Gents on the ground with 14 carries for 102 yards. He also completed one pass for nine yards.

Bourque was limited to 85 yards on 15 carries while also picking up the Gents’ only reception of the game.
