Church Point to host Buggy Festival

CHURCH POINT – Church Point will host the 26th Annual Buggy Festival on June 6-8 at City Park on Lougarre Street.

Another year of cultural events will take place, with the “Buggy” being highlighted as our ancestors main means of transportation. Throughout the weekend buggies will be on display, and on Sunday they will be the focus of the Grand Parade.

Also, this year, seven to ten professional Accordion players will perform in “The Accordion Extravaganza.”

Beverages for the family will be available along with mostly Cajun foods. For those who love to shop, homemade crafts, novelties and souvenirs will be available.

The festivities will begin on Friday, June 6 at 5:30 p.m., with an opening ceremony, invocation and blessing. At 6:30 p.m. the festival grounds will open to the public, and from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. live music will be performed, food and drinks will be available, and the buggy display will be out for exhibit.

On Saturday, June 7, the festival grounds will open at 9:30 a.m. and will remain open until 1 a.m., again with entertainment and refreshments being provided.

On Sunday, June 8, the grounds will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the crowning of the 2008-09 festival Queen and Teen Queen taking place at the park pavillion at 11 a.m., and the Grand Buggy Festival Parade, consisting of buggies, antique cars, horse drawn carriages, and floats, at 1 p.m.

On Friday, Lil Kenny and The Heartbreakers will be providing the entertainment from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., and from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., Kevin Naquin and The Ossun Playboys will be playing.

On Saturday, Howard Noel, Bradley Venable and Hard To Find Playboys will be playing from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., Don Fontenot and Les Amis De La Louisiana will be playing from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Leon Chevis and Zydeco Flames will be playing from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Paul Daigle and Cajun Gold Band will be playing from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., the Accordion Extravaganza, featuring seven to 10 professional players, will begin at 8 p.m., and Travis Matte and The Kingpins will be playing from 10:30 p.m. to 1 p.m.

On Sunday, Cornmealers will be playing from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the Accordion Youth Extravaganza, with seven youths performing, will begin at 12 p.m., the Don Rich Band will be playing from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and at 6 p.m., the festival will come to an end.
