Church Point tops Caldwell: St. Charles upends Rayne
CHURCH POINT – It may have started slowly, but Friday’s first-round Class AAA playoff game between Church Point and Caldwell finally lived up to it’s high-scoring billing in the second half.
Church Point held a 12-6 advantage at the half before outscoring Caldwell 34-28 in the final 24 minutes to pick a wild 46-34 victory, its first playoff win since 1990.
Church Point will now take on Notre Dame in Crowley this Friday in the second round. The Pios defeated Sarah Reed, 37-0, to advance to the Regional round.
“In the second half it turned out to be what everybody thought it would be - both teams just going up and down the field,” said CPHS coach John Craig Arceneaux.
Both teams traded scores to start the second half before Bruce Citizen gave the Bears a 26-12 lead on a 54-yard touchdown run.
The turning point occurred on the ensuing kickoff when Church Point attempted an onside kick. The Bears recovered and drove down to the CHS 4-yard line where Dillion Matte punched it in with 37 seconds left in the third quarter.
“The onside kick was huge,” said Arceneaux. “We recovered and went up three scores and that kind of took them out of what they wanted to do.”
Bruce Citizen and Joseph Carrier did most of the damage for the Bears, combining for 269 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Von Duplechain added 76 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.
Blake Boudreaux completed eight passes for 94 yards and a touchdown. He hit Duplechain three times for 27 yards, Carrier twice for 30 yards and a touchdown and Citizen twice for 18 yards.
In other local playoff action, Rayne fell to St. Charles, 31-6.
Rayne led 6-0 early before St. Charles scored 31 unanswered points to earn the convincing win over the 29th-seeded Wolves.
Rayne’s lone score occurred on a 77-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Venable to Andrew Wynn.
“We played as well as we did all year,” said RHS coach Curt Ware. “St. Charles is a good football team.”
St. Charles’ Courtland Tayler led the Comets’ ground attack, rushing 18 times for 155 yards and one touchdown while quarterback Henri Faucheux completed four passes for 80 yards and two scores. Alex Marse had three receptions for 59 yards and one touchdown and Zach Goodwin caught one pass for 21 yards and a score.
Antonio Wheeler paced the Wolves on the ground with 54 yards on 11 carries while Venable completed 11 passes for 146 yards. Wynn led all receivers with three catches for 92 yards. Wheeler and Vincent Sinegal had two receptions each for 23 and 20 yards respectively.
