CROWLEY – The Crowley City Council met Tuesday night to discuss and consider a variety of issues including the possible condemnation of several properties around Crowley and the authorization of a beer and liquor permit for the South Park Liquor store at 912 S. Parkerson Ave.

Before the meeting moved to committee reports Alderman Vernon “Step” Martin asked for a clarification on the sewer usage fees that Crowley residents are being charged. According to Martin, several citizens have approached him inquiring as to why the fee is higher than their actual water bill in some cases.

“I would just like to know how to explain this to our citizens?,” Martin asked.

City Engineer Tim Mader explained that there is no relation between the water rate structure of the city and the sewer usage fee.

“It is an unrelated situation where we are billed separately for sewerage use,” Mader said.

“People aren’t going to stop us on the street to thank us for being able to flush their toilets,” added Mayor Jones to the laughter of the council.

There was a public hearing to discuss the condemnation for a property owned by Earl Grant Jr. Attorney Glenn Howie obviously put in some extra work finding Grant’s sons who expressed their interest in cleaning up the property.

City Inspector Danny Hebert agreed to suspend the decree by 90 days.

“I would just like to thank those involved for their diligence in finding the owners of this property,” added Jones.

During Alderman Todd Whiting’s public safety report the council agreed to proceed with condemnation actions against four other local properties which have been deemed as hazardous by Hebert.

Alderwoman Kitty Valdetero expressed her commendation to Hebert for the work he has put in with dealing with these properties.

In another matter, the council unanimously approved the awarding of a liquor license to South Park Liquor store, located at 912 S. Parkerson Ave.
