Cormier, Gantt pace Rebels past Bulldogs
By Chris Quebedeaux
MIDLAND – Midland’s leading scorer, Miles Sonnier, has been sidelined the last two games with a slight ankle sprain.
For most teams, that would be a major problem.
For Midland, not so much, thanks to B.J. Cormier and Colby Gantt.
The two combined for 51 points Monday night, leading Midland to a 79-41 non-district victory over Iota’s Bulldogs.
The two now have combined for 80 points in Sonnier’s absence as the Rebels have improved to 14-3 on the year. Iota, meanwhile, dropped to 2-9.
Cormier, a junior guard, led all scorers with 26 points. Gantt, also a junior guard, followed with 25. Also in double figures for the Rebels were Allen Fontenot with 12 points and Mike Vincent with 10.
Iota was led by Brennan Miller with 14 points and Jordan Sylestine with 11.
Midland opened the game by taking a 14-5 lead in the first quarter before exploding for 30 points in the second frame to extend the cushion to 44-15 at the intermission.
Fontenot fueled the scoring frenzy before the half, scoring eight points in the final minute. He hit a turn around jumper in the lane before drilling a 3-pointer from the corner with seconds remaining. An Iota turnover gave Midland the ball back with 1.6 seconds left and on the ensuing inbounds play, Fontenot spun around and drilled another 3-pointer from the timeline at the buzzer.
Midland went on to outscore Iota 35-18 in the second half.
Midland finished with 15 3-pointers, with Cormier and Gantt connecting on six each. Fontenot added two and Mike Vincent had one.
Also contributing in the victory were T.J. Gautreaux with four points and Chase Vincent with two.
Also scoring for Iota were Tyler LeBlanc with seven points, Johnny Guidry with four, Coby Wickman with three and Bryce Zaunbrecher with two.
Midland returns to action Friday in Pitkin.
