Council to consider buying police vacation hours

The Eunice City Council is expected to consider paying Police Department employees for earned vacation not used before Dec. 31.

Police Chief Gary Fontenot told council members attending an agenda-setting meeting that he thought it would be cheaper to buy back the vacation days than to pay overtime to cover absent officers when they took leave.

He said he will provide the council compartive cost analysis at Tuesday night's meeting.

The department, which last month hired five officers, has been understaffed in recent months, making it difficult for people to take scheduled vacation time.

Another police-related item expected to be discussed at the December council meeting is a concern about vehicle speeding.

Alderman Dale Soileau has asked the department to do a traffic survey for the purposed of determing whether the speed limit should be adjusted on North 12th, West Paka nd North 3rd.

Chief Fontenot said the problem on city streets not the posted speeds but the "heavy feet" of the population.
