Council passes tough trash law

St. Martinville — The City Council Monday, May 19, ratified an ordinance to levy hefty fines against persons depositing large piles of debris or trash at the curbside.

Under the new law, any resident who has a pile of branches over five cubic yards will be charged $7 per cubic yard for the entire pile.

Any pile of trash over three cubic yards, the resident will be charged $20 per cubic yard for the whole pile.

Construction materials — including but not limited to debris from remodeling, new construction or demolition — must be contained and removed by the resident or property owner. If the city has to cart it off, it will assess $20 per cubic yard.

An exception will be granted in the case of uninsured property destroyed by fire.
