Creating a festive Mardi Gras tree
By Paula Guillory
A ‘Mardi Gras tree’ has become an increasingly popular choice for adding beautiful, bold Mardi Gras decor to any space. These can be incorporated into a home decorative scheme or be used as a standalone eye-catcher.
To create beautiful tree start with an artificial Christmas tree with white lights then add yellow, green and purple lights to the white lights already on tree. Make sure these lights are evenly distributed on the festive tree. Incorporate glass balls of gold and silver from your Christmas tree decorations. Now you are ready to have fun creating a festive tree.
The use of Mardi Gras beads is a cost-effective way to add to the tree. Gather last year’s beads and use them to drape the tree or string them throughout the tree similar to garland. Remember to save the beads from this season for use in your future decor, they can even be added to a clear vase and used as a center piece on an entrance table.
A festive tree should include fun, metallic pieces to add New Orleans flair and express true Mardi Gras spirit. Keep this in mind as you shop for pieces to add to your tree. Purple, yellow and green, traditional Mardi Gras color, can be your launching pad to designing a unique, one of a kind piece.
Consider plastic trinkets, lavish feathers, even artificial flowers as proper decor. For all LSU fans, use your purple and gold tiger gear to personalize your tree. Don’t forget that Mardi Gras masks and saxophones or trumpets can jazz up the decor as well.
A festive tree topper is your opportunity to get creative. This can include just about anything Mardi Gras means to you. Use feathers, beading, or any fun, festive material. One idea for a topper is to use three yellow feathers, three green feathers and three purple feathers and arrange them into a fan using a yellow, green, and purple feather alternately. Attach the feathers to the top to complete your festive, Mardi Gras tree.
