Crowley fends off late Bunkie rally

CROWLEY – When Crowley needed a big play both offensively and defensively Saturday in a non-district showdown with Bunkie, Tyler Dupuis was there to oblige.

Offensively, the junior centerfielder went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and four RBI. Defensively, he thwarted a late comeback attempt by gunning down the tying run at the plate in the seventh inning, helping the Gents preserve an 11-10 victory over the visiting Panthers.

The Gents improved to 6-13-1 on the season with the victory while Bunkie fell to 7-12.

Bunkie actually led 3-0 after the first inning before Crowley scored 10 unanswered runs in the next two innings.

In the second inning, Crowley rallied with two outs, collecting three straight hits off Bunkie starter Dylan West. Justin Desselle had two-run triple and Dupuis drove in one with a double to give the Gents a 4-3 advantage.

Crowley added six more runs in the bottom of the third on five hits. Desselle singled in a run to start things off and, later, Dupuis plated three more runs on his second double of the game.

Bunkie battled back in the top of the fourth, cutting the lead to 10-7on four hits, including Corey Manuel’s two-run home run off Taylor Bertrand. Manuel was actually hit by a pitch before his round tripper but was sent back to the plate by the umpire for not attempting to move out of the way of the pitch.

Crowley plated its final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth when Bertrand walked and eventually scored on a balk.

Bunkie cut the lead to 11-10 in the sixth and the Panthers had the tying run at second base with one out in the seventh. Following a single to center, Charlie Mayeux attempted to score from second. That’s when Dupuis unloaded a strike to the plate to gun him down for the second out. Crowley reliever Corde McCall got the next batter to fly out to right to end the game.

Jake Trahan picked up the victory, giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk.

Dupuis and Desselle led the Gents at the plate, combining for five hits and seven RBI. Desselle was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI. Bertrand also had two hits.

McCall, Chad Hoffpauir, Taylor Doughty and Donovan Morris each had a single in the winning effort.

Crowley took on Rayne last night, but results of that game were not available at press time.

The Gents step out of league play this evening when they entertain Cecilia at Miller Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6 o’clock.
