Crowley High to host first half of Acadia/Vermilion Parish Jamboree
CROWLEY – For the last three years, the Crowley Gents have kicked off their football seasons on the road in the Acadia/Vermilion Parish Jamboree.
The Gents won’t have to do that this fall, instead acting as the host team for the opening-night session of the Acadia-Vermilion Jamboree.
The event, which is in its final year of a four-year contract, will be held at Crowley ’s Gardiner Memorial Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 25.
Iota will play North Vermilion in the first game of the evening at 6. The homestanding Gents will take the field shortly after the first contest and take on Kaplan.
“In the contract, each team would be the host in one of the four years and we were the last team to host in Acadia Parish,” said CHS coach Tommy Tate. “It’s been a good contract. It’s been good for both parishes.”
The Gents will have a scrimmage with Beau Chene next week to see how they have progressed in the first two weeks of practice, but Tate is more excited about the jamboree because it is more of a game-like situation.
“The thing about the jamboree, as a coach, you look at it as a dress rehearsal,” said Tate. “You look to get a lot of communication on the sidelines, the press box, filming, special teams...all the things that come about in a real game.
“You have the officials out there, you have the play clock running; you don’t get that in the scrimmage so that’s what we’re looking for in the jamboree.”
The chance to get in a home game before the actual season kicks off is also something Tate and his squad looks forward to.
“I think playing at our home field gives our fans get a chance to come into the stadium and see an exciting night of football,” said Tate. “They get to see two games of football. We’re looking forward to having a great crowd and getting the season kicked off.”
The second portion of the jamboree will be played on Friday, Aug. 26 in Erath. In the opening game there, Gueydan will take on Erath’s jayvee squad at 5:30 p.m.; Church Point will square off with Abbeville at 7 and Rayne will take on Erath at 8.
Each game will consist of two 15-minute halves.
