Crowley, Notre Dame open league play
CROWLEY - With the first half of the prep basketball season in the books, the second and most meaningful portion of the schedule gets underway this evening when district play begins for most local boys’ teams.
The Crowley Gents tip off District 5-AAA play with a road contest at Church Point while the Notre Dame Pios open their league slate at Rayne.
Other boys games include Iota hosting Westlake and Midland hosting Grand Lake.
Crowley (13-7), considered by most to be one of the two favorites this year in District 5-AAA along with Northwest, enters tonight’s game on a three-game winning streak. The Gents, who started the season winning their first seven games, lost seven of their last 13 before their recent streak.
That streak began with a 53-47 victory over West St. Mary (53-47) and includes wins over Buckeye (45-40) and Brusly (82-58) during the last week and a half.
Church Point (4-14) enters with momentum as well. The Bears put a halt to a five-game skid Friday by picking up a 44-40 road victory over Eunice.
Notre Dame (8-12) has been streaky during the last few weeks, going 3-2 since the holiday break. However, the Pios are coming off a big 68-52 victory over Welsh Friday.
Rayne, on the other hand, has won just two of its last eight games. Returning just two starters from last year’s district runnerup squad, the Wolvers are currently 6-11 on the season.
Iota’s Bulldogs will also open up league play tonight, hosting the Westlake Rams at 7 o’clock.
The Bulldogs have struggled through a rugged non-district schedule, but they sit at 6-13 after a key 66-65 victory over rival St. Edmund Friday.
Westlake enters with a 12-10 mark following a 48-47 victory over Barbe.
In Midland, the Rebels have a chance to extend their advantage in District 7-B with a victory over Grand Lake.
The Rebels (22-5) are currently 2-0 in league play after victories over ESA and Hathaway last week. Lacassine, Hathaway and Bell City are all 1-1 while ESA rounds out the standings at 0-2.
In girls’ action, Crowley (8-7, 1-0) and Northwest (12-8, 2-0) square off in a battle of 5-AAA unbeatens while Notre Dame (11-7, 0-1) looks to pick up its first league win at Rayne (5-13, 0-2).
Midland (19-10, 1-0) takes on Grand Lake (26-3, 1-0) and Iota (18-8, 0-1) hosts Westlake (8-14, 0-1).
